For those of you who do not know who Bill Goggins is - he was the long time art director for the magazine called the
NEBRASKA FARMER
When Bob Devaney first came to Nebraska, he thought the facilities were in very poor shape and he thought the logo of the Cornhuskers and the marketing efforts were degrading and downright "corny".
Devaney felt one of the major hurdles was to develop a strong will and attitude from both players and fans alike. Rather than accept defeat, Devaney thought you should be proud and believe you can win. If you believe in something you have a better chance of winning as opposed to believing you are not very good. Devaney was able to instill a very strong believe in the Cornhusker Players and Fans alike. He did start to build up the stadium and under Bob Devaney's leadership Memorial Stadium was built up into one of the largest college stadiums of its time in the 1970's.
Devaney early on brought the red cowboy hat to Lincoln - which is what he wore when he was Head Coach at Wyoming. He thought the cowboy hat was better than some of the corny mascot that he saw and he discouraged the degrading mascots and logos that he saw. This is the background to the discovery of Harry Husker.
In November of 1964 the Nebraska Farmer magazine did a feature story on the TRAINING TABLE at the University of Nebraska. It was a very positive story and it told about how many cattle growers helped provide beef to the training table and how well we fed our Football players. Bill Goggins, being the art director simply sat down at his work table and drew a colored caricature to place alongside the story, just to give the story some color and character. The guy he drew was first called
THE BIG RED MAN
and others called him
MR. BIG RED MAN
In any case, Bob Devaney happen to read that article and was so impressed with the caricature drawing that he called the NEBRASKA FARMER and asked permission to use the caricature. Both the Nebraska Farmer and Bill Goggins gave Bob Devaney permission to use the caricature.
Bill Goggins never received any money for the drawing nor did he ever receive any royalties from the many thousands of items that were made of the MR. BIG RED MAN CARICATURE. In 1965 the University of Nebraska started to use this caricature as their official mascot, even though no money was ever exchanged and never did they license or protect this caricature. They simply used this caricature. Bill Goggins, by rights, still owns the rights to this caricature. Well, once Nebraska started using this caricature in their printing and in media guides and on pennants and glasses and many other items produced by the University of Nebraska - the fans fell in love with this character and the fans fondly starting calling him
HARRY HUSKER
Thus, you have a mascot that was Drawn by Bill Goggins, Adopted by Bob Devaney and Given his name and Identity by the Fans of Nebraska. The only thing that Bill Goggins received was two football tickets that he and his lovely wife Ruth used for many years. He continued to work for the NEBRASKA FARMER magazine and drew many wonderful images throughout his career - but none ever became as popular as Harry Husker.
Harry Husker will always be associated with the Devaney Era at Nebraska - in particular the years of 1965 - 1972. In 1974 the University of Nebraska adopted HERBIE HUSKER as the official Mascot - and thus, that is why Harry Husker will always be assoicated with Bob Devaney and anything related to Bob Devaney is very much worth collecting.
Many collectors are starting to realize the importance of this mascot and many Harry Husker items are quickly being gobbled up by collectors. So, when you see Harry Husker items - I would grab them - because they will grow in value.
Here is an opportunity to get an authentic autograph from the artist who created
HARRY HUSKER
The Original Harry Husker by Bill Goggins
Please Note: To help everyone understand our type of business we need to inform bidders that we sell used items, our items come from people and individual collectors and not companies. The items are not new in the box and nothing we have ever sold has been perfect or mint. We try and list any major defect - but every item has been used and will show degree of wear. And, sometimes it is hard to describe the degree of wear or use and everyone's perception and standards are different. So, if you are concerned about specific details of any item, please email us and we will try and answer your questions. We say this because some people believe that when they buy items on ebay they expect them to look new - even if they are 50 years old. So please understand that our items are old and used and none are perfect.
My Policies:
On Domestic shipments, please understand that INSURANCE is the OPTION and the RESPONSIBILITY of the BUYER and we never add insurance to an item unless instructed to do so by the BUYER. Therefore we are not responsible for lost or damaged items by the Post Office or other delievery company. We do everything to pack each item carefully, but we cannot control how the item is handled once we ship it. Therefore consider insurance carefully on fragile and rare items. Insurance is always listed at $1.65 and that covers insurance for the first $50.00. Insurance is then charged at the same rate as the post office, $1.65 for each additional $100.00 of insurance desired. Thank you. We do require insurance on all international shipments for items that sell for $50.00 or more. Do not bid on items if you are not willing to pay for insurance on items that sell for $50 or more. This will require that the item be shipped by Priority Mail.
All Sales shipped in the State of Colorado will require a 6.85% Sales Tax. This is required by the Colorado Department of Revenue. Thank you for your understanding.
Because of recent changes in Ebay and Paypal, virtually all items must be shipped with Delivery Confirmation to protect the Buyer and Seller. This has increased the cost Shipping. Please understand this is the result of Ebay trying to elimate the problems of fraud in the Ebay marketplace and we are in agreement that Ebay must be a safe place for people to shop. On items that have a value of over $200 - Signature Confirmation is now required. This also is the policy of Ebay and Paypal. This has affected the cost of shipping items of value. We do not charge a handling fee on items we ship and we try and ship items in the most feasible manner possible. We normally ship items in envelopes by First Class Mail or Media Mail with Delivery Confirmation and Boxed items via priority mail with Delivery Confirmation. We make trips to the Post Office and Fed Ex on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays and items are shipped out within 2 or 3 days after payment in full has been received. Large items and heavy items we ship via Fed Ex or UPS Ground because tracking and insurance is included in their shipping charges up to $100.00. If we list the option of shipping as "OTHER" - this means we are shipping the item via FED EX GROUND or UPS GROUND and we need a physical address to ship to and thus no P.O. Boxes are allowed on FED EX or UPS Shipments. Fed Ex and UPS Ground takes 4 to 7 days - depending upon location in the U.S. We always are happy to combine shipping to save you money. If we combine items to save on shipping costs, we just ask that you settle up within two weeks of the first item sold. We do not wish to hold items for more than two weeks. If you would like an item shipped in a certain way - we will be happy to do whatever you wish. But if you request custom shipping or the use of extra supplies, we must charge for the cost of extra supplies. ALL SHIPPING QUOTES ARE FOR U.S. DELIVERY ONLY!!!! Concerning International Shipments - ALL INTERNATIONAL BIDDERS WILL PAY THE ACTUAL INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING CHARGES. International Bidders, please be aware that shipping around the world cost more than it does to ship within a country. Do not bid if you are unwilling to pay the International Shipping Rates which are often high. Because of the recent postal changes, Insurance is no longer available on International First Class Mail. Insurance is only available through the Post Office if an item is shipped via International Priority Mail. And, because of recent policy changes in Ebay and Paypal, they encourage that all shipments be sent with tracking. So, we also request that all International Shipping be sent via Priority Mail with insurance. This is expensive and only bid if you are aware of the high cost of shipping. We will quote First Class Mailing Cost, but we do not recommend this method of shipping. Any item over $50 in value we will REQUIRE INSURANCE if we ship internationally. Please Note: WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR LOST OR DAMAGED ITEMS. WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR SHIPMENTS THAT ARE SLOW DUE TO THE POST OFFICE. Therefore, International Bidders should carefully consider Insurance.
